The two most accessible and important works on the subject are: William Harrison's Description of Britaine and England, in Holinshed's Chronicle, 1577, reprinted in the Shaks. Soc. Publ. 1877-1888, in the Scott Library, 1899, and in Everyman's Library; and John Stow's Survey of London, 1st ed., 1598, reprinted in Everyman's Library. J. D. Wilson's Life in Shakespeare's England (Cambridge, 1911) is an excellent anthology drawn from Elizabethan publications.
